Kiwi Travel Advice
Flights & Arrival
Most international travelers will enter New Zealand through Auckland (AKL) or Christchurch (CHC) before connecting to Queenstown (ZQN). Queenstown is the closest airport to Wanaka, offering stunning views upon arrival. Both Air New Zealand and Jetstar offer domestic flights to Queenstown. Ask Ruby or James if you have any questions.
Best Time to Arrive
To beat the jet lag and enjoy the time spent in NZ, we suggest arriving at least three to four days before the wedding and recommend a big glass of red wine and a sleeping pill for the flight over!
New Zealand Weather
February is the end of summer in NZ and is typically warm, dry, and sunny, with daytime temperatures around 22–26 °C (72–79 °F) and occasional hotter days reaching 30 °C (86 °F). Evenings cool down to about 9–11 °C (48–52 °F) so make sure to pack both warm clothes and sun screen!!
Money & Cards
New Zealand is essentially cashless; Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere via 'EFTPOS'. American Express is hit or miss on acceptance in NZ.
Visa Requirements
All visitors require an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before boarding their flight. Apply via the official website at least one week before you travel. You can apply here: https://nzeta.immigration.govt.nz/
Transport to Wanaka
Wanaka is an hour’s drive from Queenstown. Hiring a car is highly recommended if you plan on exploring further but you can book local shuttle services as well.
Accomodation
Wanaka is a fairly small resort town, and February is a busy month (especially this weekend). If you're able to come celebrate with us, we recommend booking accommodation sooner rather than later.
We suggest staying in Wanaka township, where there are a range of Airbnbs and hotels, which will be the best options.
Mobile Data
eSIMs like Airalo are the easiest way to get set up before you arrive but if you will also be able to buy a sim card on arrival to Auckland Airport as well.
